I am foot and ankle surgeon. Ironically, I was ski jumping in the terain park at Mt. Snow and landed on both skiis, but short, leaning a bit back. Too much impact for my right leg and felt immediate numbness in my ski boot. I sustained an open tibial fracture just above the bottom ski boot (leg) buckle and a higher fibular fracture. After being sledded by Ski Patrol to the medical station, I was stabilized and taken by ambulance to Southern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT. My ski boot was removed there by the ER phsycian and then brought to the pre op area where I met Dr. Nofziger. His bed side manner is tremendous. I work with many doctors and surgeons in northern NJ and I found him to be in the elite category. He was very detailed and explanative of my care. My most important fear was that he didn't regularly perform the tibial nail (rod) procedure which I required. But, he assured me had done many, many similar cases. With that said, he got near anatomic reduction of my tibia and the fibula followed suit. So, its been 6 months now (I am 57) and am walking normally. Finishing my physical therapy to make it strong. I want to thank the entire SVMC staff for their care, including my start in the ER. , Dr. Matthew Nofziger, the floor nursing staff, along with both my hospital physical therapists who got me up on crutches within one day and back home. My leg looks great and I highly recommend Dr. Nofziger for Orthopedic care. I will be skiing this winter, but not jumping...
